Whether you are starting a shop, selling on Amazon or Flipkart, or freelancing for clients across India, one of the first compliance questions is: do I need GST registration? This guide explains the turnover limits, the situations where registration is compulsory no matter how small you are, the documents to keep ready and how the online process works.
Who must register for GST?
Registration depends on your aggregate turnover in a financial year — the total of taxable, exempt, export and inter-state supplies across all businesses under the same PAN.
- Supply of goods: ₹40 lakh in most states (₹20 lakh in some special category states and Telangana).
- Supply of services: ₹20 lakh in most states (₹10 lakh in special category states).
Registration is compulsory regardless of turnover if you:
- Make inter-state taxable supplies of goods
- Sell through e-commerce marketplaces where the operator collects tax at source (TCS)
- Are a casual taxable person or a non-resident taxable person
- Are liable to pay tax under reverse charge
- Are required to deduct TDS or collect TCS under GST
- Act as an agent supplying on behalf of others, or as an Input Service Distributor

Documents required for GST registration
- PAN of the business / proprietor
- Aadhaar and photograph of the proprietor, partners or directors
- Proof of business address — electricity bill, property tax receipt or rent agreement, plus an NOC from the owner if rented
- Bank details — cancelled cheque or recent bank statement
- Constitution documents — partnership deed, LLP agreement or Certificate of Incorporation, as applicable
- Authorisation letter or board resolution for the authorised signatory
Step-by-step GST registration process
- Part A: Enter PAN, mobile number and email on the GST portal and verify with OTP to get a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).
- Part B: Fill in business details, promoters, place of business, goods/services (HSN/SAC codes) and bank details, and upload documents.
- Aadhaar authentication: Opting for Aadhaar authentication usually speeds up approval.
- Submit and get ARN: Submit with DSC or EVC and receive an Application Reference Number to track status.
- GSTIN issued: If the officer has no queries, your GST certificate and GSTIN are usually issued within about 7 working days. Queries or physical verification can take longer.
Should you register voluntarily?
Even below the limit, voluntary registration can help you claim input tax credit on purchases, work with larger B2B clients who prefer GST-registered vendors, and sell on online marketplaces. Small businesses can also consider the Composition Scheme for simpler compliance. Remember: once registered, you must file returns regularly, even if there is no business in a month — read our GST return filing service to see what is involved.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the wrong business category or HSN/SAC codes
- Uploading unclear address proof or missing the owner’s NOC
- Mismatch between PAN, Aadhaar and bank details
- Ignoring a clarification notice from the officer — the application can be rejected
